Relay Logistics
Logistics of The Black & Blue
The Black & Blue is a relay, with teams comprised of 1 - 8 cyclists. The 200-mile course is divided into 8 stages
of approximately 25 miles per stage (actual range is 17.8 miles to 29.6 miles). Solo riders are accepted and will be
considered a team of one (team category 1:1). Teams registered in other team categories (see registration page) will
ride in an established rotation. One rider per team will be on the course at any given time.
As an example, a 4:2 team (4 cyclists, each riding 2 times) will have the rotation in the table below. Each cyclist rides
approximately 25 miles per stage x 2 stages for a total of 50 miles per rider. Please note that the rotation is determined
before the start and must be maintained throughout the course.
| Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Stage 3 | Stage 4 | Stage 5 | Stage 6 | Stage 7 | Stage 8 |
| Rider 1 | Rider 2 | Rider 3 | Rider 4 | Rider 1 | Rider 2 | Rider 3 | Rider 4 |
Support/exchange zones are located on the course approximately every 25 miles. Riders/teams may receive support at
these locations only (support is not permitted at any other location or on the course). In addition, teams may rotate/exchange
riders at these locations only.
Exchange Zone
A rolling exchange is permitted when safe. A rolling exchange occurs when the incoming rider is slowing and the outgoing
rider is starting; a minimum of the front tire of the incoming rider will parallel the rear tire of the outgoing rider (applicable on
Exchange Zones 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7). However, when not safe to complete a rolling exchange (Exchange Zone 2), such as in
the case of vehicular traffic, the incoming rider will stop completely before the outgoing rider begins.
